Garbage Collection

Recycling and disposal facilities

The District does not have a mandatory garbage collection program. Home owners can contact one of several contractors currently operating in Coldstream to obtain curbside collection. Check your Yellow Pages directory under "Garbage Collection".

Alternatively, you may wish to take your waste to the Greater Vernon Recycling and Disposal Facility at 120 Birnie Road, 4 km south of Vernon on Highway 97. Phone 250-545-6410.

Recycling

There is a regional curbside collection system in place for recycling of paper products, plastics, tin and aluminum, and cardboard (no glass, no styrafoam, no medical waste). Mix materials together in blue or clear bags, no bag limit, maximum per bag weight of 20 kg (44 lbs). Cardboard should be bundled and tied in 1 metre sections, set at the curb (weather permitting). Place at the curbside by 7:00 a.m. See page 18 of the Recycling Calendar (PDF) for pick‑up dates in your area, every two weeks. The $19.94 annual fee for this service is included in your property taxes.

You can take the following recycleable materials to the Greater Vernon Recycling and Disposal Facility (see links above re location map, hours of operation, how to use the facility, and fee bylaw) for a fee: metal, propane tanks, wood, batteries, tires, yard waste, gypsum/drywall, refrigeration units, concrete, asphalt, asphalt shingles and bricks. Blue Bag materials and cardboard can be dropped off without charge into designated bins.

In addition, many other items such as batteries, glass and paint can be recycled via “Drop-off Recycling” at a variety of locations. For a complete list of drop-off recycling programs in the North Okanagan, go online to www.bcstewards.com.
